A RESIDENTIAL CASE STUDY

EXISTING RESIDENTIAL HOMES

Residential Solar installs represent the majority of the work that ProSolar undertakes in the Cayman Islands and further Caribbean. With our experience in completing close to 500 installs in the region ProSolar has gained considerable experience with the idiosyncrasies facing us in the Caribbean.

Many houses for example are close if not directly on the coast facing the full elements from the Caribbean Sea. As expected, our installs have weathered all conditions very well. Our panels are warranted for 25 years and our racking material warranted for 3 years. We monitor the performance of each panel on an “up to the minute basis.”

NEWLY BUILT HOMES

Homes that are developed today are generally very efficient. Most developers will include the latest in insulation, LED lights, highest rated A/C systems and the most efficient in appliances.

For the new development therefore the process if far simpler; once we have the load calculations we know exactly the size system CUC will allow us to build. Pro Solar was privileged to be able to install solar for a new development in Cayman Kai which turned out to be a 13KW install for which we used LG panels with the combined inverter.

Even though the development is situated directly on the beach we still expect to have very little follow up in order to keep the system running smoothly. We monitor each system from our offices and any reduction in output will be investigated immediately.

This particular house was extremely inefficient. The CI$900.00 bill was the result of inefficient air conditioners (10 SEER), a single speed pool pump, electric stove and oven, electric dryer and water heater and no LED lights. Our first mission was to upgrade all of these appliances and once finished, the client’s bill had dropped to CI$430.00 per month.

We ultimately decided to install a smaller solar array as the children in the house were starting to move away and less power would be required over time. As of today the CUC bill stands at CI$150.00 per month and the whole system will pay for itself in just over 4 years.

A VEHICLE CASE STUDY

THE NISSAN LEAF

Mitzi Callan:

Mitzi Callan is beginning her journey of reducing her overall cost of living. Pro Solar is currently designing her 10kw solar system but while she is waiting she has also taken a huge chunk out of her living expenses by purchasing a an electric car, in particular a Nissan Leaf.

She has also installed a 240 volt charger for her home that will fill her car’s battery twice as fast as the conventional charger.

Running an electric car in the Cayman Islands is 1/4 of the cost of running a conventional car.

Once Mitzi completes her journey her overall living expenses will have been reduced by CI$700.00 per month!

The Nissan Leaf might well be the perfect Island Car, and Pro Solar sells the 2013 Nissan Leaf 15k miles for CI$15k.
